AFRICAN BAMILEKE FEMALE BEADED MASK W BRONZE OR COPPER EMBELLISHMENTS, CAMEROON GRASSLANDS
VERY LARGE AFRIKA BAMILEKE BEADED MASK WITH WOVEN BRAIDED FIBER HAIR OR CEREMONIAL HEAD DRESS. SIMILAR TYPES OF MASKS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED IN VARIOUS AREAS OF CAMEROON GRASSLANDS. DESPITE THE ETHNIC AND STYLISTIC VARIATIONS OF PEOPLE LIVING IN THEIR REGIONS. SOME OF THE SELECT SOCIETIES WHO USED THESE MASKS, BELIEVED THAT ACCORDING TO TRADITION THEIR MASKS HAD BEEN CREATED AND CONSECRATED BY THE ANCESTORS THEMSELVES, OTHERS INSPIRED GREAT FEAR, THERE WERE MASKS DECORATED WITH BEADS, COPPER, AND COWRY SHELLS ALONG WITH CLOTH AND FIBER. MOST OF THE KINGDOMS DEPICTED MASKS PRESENTING MALE AND FEMALE HUMAN HEADS OF FACES, OR ANIMALS SUCH AS THE BUFFALO, ELEPHANT, GAZELLE ANTELOPE, AND BIRDS MASKS. THESE ARE USUALLY WORN DURING CEREMONIES OR DURING ANNUAL FESTIVITIES. MATERIAL: WOOD, BEADS, ORGANIC FABRIC FIBER,BRONZE OR COPPER EMBELLISHMENTS. THE LANGUAGE SPOKEN:  BAMILEKE (MARCO-BANTU) THE PEOPLE OF THE CAMEROON GRASSLANDS. NEIGHBORING PEOPLES: BAMUN, KOM, AND BABANKI. THE WEIGHTED DECORATIVE WALL MASK MEASURES APPROX 15 3/4" HIGH X 10" WIDE. VERY GOOD EXAMPLE WITH AGE RELATED WEAR FROM HISTORY AND USE. SOME OF THE TINY MICRO BEADS HAVE REMOVED AND ARE MISSING.
