Description
Part of my personal collection that I have owned about 15 years. The Ekoi (or Ejagham) live along the river Cross in Southeast Nigeria, on the border of Cameroon. In former times, their warriors are said to have danced with the actual heads of their killed enemies. However, this cult changed long before the arrival of the Europeans on their territory: since then the Ekoi people have manufactured these heads carved in wood, covered with antelope or goats leather and dyed. This particular example was made by the Ejagham Ekoi peoples and is characteristic of a genre popular across the region. Some are startlingly naturalistic and may be portraits of known individuals; others are highly stylized. Has a rattan base with 4 real human teeth. Mid 20th century.
