    Description

A lot of the African masks on eBay described as "genuine", "old", "antique" or "tribally used" are none of these. They seem to sell OK if under 0 but I fear the buyers are mislead.
Here is a bona fide authentic helmet mask from the Kuba people of the DRC. Very large at 15" long/tall, it was obviously used and worn before being collected. The elaborately polychromed surface has aged to a muted appearance while the wood has been burnished to a dull gloss from handling. The
    raffia
ruff is completely intact. Attachment holes around the large opening on top are elongated from lacing (photo 9). An
    indigenous
repair comprised of cord threaded through two of them
holds a split from opening (photo 10). All the details of this mask are completely traditional with none of the "gussied-up" foolishness meant to please tourists. A really excellent example!
Mask is 11" x 15" x 9", not heavy but bulky to ship. Ask questions or see more pictures - [Boston Primitive]
    U.S. bidders please.
